Dry Season vs Rainy Season: When Should You Schedule Exterior Painting in South Florida?
Paint sticks better and lasts longer when it goes on in South Florida's dry season. Here is how to pick the right window for your project.

The Short Answer
The dry season, roughly October through April, is the best time to paint the outside of a South Florida home or building. Lower humidity, steadier temperatures and less rain give paint a dry wall to stick to and time to cure. Painting in the rainy season is possible, but the results are less reliable on stucco and masonry.
Why Timing Matters So Much Here
Exterior paint needs two things: a dry wall and time to cure before it gets wet again. In much of the country, working around the weather is easy. In South Florida, it makes a real difference in how long a paint job lasts.
The rainy season brings afternoon storms, heavy humidity and heat that pushes moisture into stucco walls. Paint that gets rained on before it cures does not bond well, and that shows up later as blisters, peeling or early chalking. The dry season takes most of that risk away.
Why the Dry Season Gives Better Results
Lower humidity means the walls dry out more and the paint makes full contact with the surface.
Steadier temperatures help the paint cure evenly. Big swings between applying and curing can leave the paint stuck well in some spots and poorly in others.
Longer gaps between rains give the paint time to cure fully before it gets wet, which helps the job last. Because this is the busy season for exterior work, it helps to plan ahead and get on the schedule early.
When Rainy Season Painting Can Work
Painting during the rainy season can work when:
- A repair is urgent and cannot wait
- The forecast shows several dry days in a row
- The job is small, or on a covered or shaded wall that does not take direct rain
- The wall has fully dried out from earlier rain
It is a poor bet when:
- The whole outside of the house needs coating
- The weather is stormy and unpredictable
- The walls have been holding moisture from water getting in
What Goes Wrong When Paint Goes On in Bad Conditions
Paint put on a damp wall does not always fail right away. A job done in August can look fine when it is finished and start blistering and peeling months later.
Blistering is moisture trapped behind the paint that swells in the heat and raises bubbles. Once a blister opens, water gets in and more paint lifts. Stucco joints and corners soak up the most moisture, so that is where poor adhesion shows first. Paint that cures in heavy humidity also turns chalky and fades sooner.
How to Plan Your Exterior Painting
End of the Rainy Season: Inspect
Look at the walls and list what needs to happen before painting. That usually means stucco repairs and cleaning off any white mineral stains. It also means caulk replacement around windows and doors. Prep work can be done in dry stretches of weather.
Early Fall: Choose the Product and Book
Decide between elastomeric coating and regular paint based on the wall's condition, age and closeness to the ocean. Our guide to elastomeric coating vs paint helps. Our residential painting services cover both.
Fall Into Early Winter: Paint
The best window. Walls are dry, temperatures are steady and the paint has time to cure before the next real rain.
Later Winter Into Spring: Still Good
Still the dry season and still good conditions, though it is a busy time for exterior contractors.
HOA communities have their own rules on colors and approvals. See HOA exterior painting requirements in Florida.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Paint a House During South Florida's Rainy Season?
Yes, but it takes care. The wall has to be completely dry, the forecast needs several dry days and the wall cannot be holding moisture. For a full exterior paint job, waiting for the dry season usually gives a better result.
How Long Does Exterior Paint Last on South Florida Stucco?
It depends on the product, the prep and how exposed the walls are. Elastomeric coating usually lasts longer than regular paint on stucco. Paint put on in the rainy season tends to wear out sooner either way.
When Should I Book an Exterior Painting Contractor?
Plan ahead. The dry season is the busiest time for exterior work in South Florida, so calling toward the end of the rainy season gives you the best choice of dates.
Which Side of the House Wears Out First?
Walls facing south and east usually take the most sun and wear out first. On homes near the ocean in Palm Beach, Highland Beach and Boca Raton, the walls facing the water also take salt air and tend to show wear before the other sides.
